Laboratory

We had to do exercises on a computer about reading, writing and vocabulary.

Reading:

In this part, I did exercises to improve my English reading. For example: I defined my purpose to read.

In others exercises, I learned to find information by scanning the text. Therefore, I identified the main arguments in a text and summarised the information I found.

Vocabulary:

The aim of this part is to look strategies for dealing with unknown words. The most important thing is to use the context to guess the meaning of words. To understand a text, we don’t need to know the meaning of each word.

First, when I read a text, I try to understand the principal meaning. When there are unknown words which are necessary for understanding , I search in the dictionnary. I prefer a bilingual dictionnary: it’s the quickest and most efficient way with simple words. With more complicated words, it may be difficult to find an exact translation. So I use the language forum on wordereference on internet.

Writing:

In this part, I learned the tools required to write an essay: analysing the title, deciding on the structure, planning the essay, separating main points and supporting points and linking ideas.

Most common fault in essays and report are illogical structure, irrelevance and incompleteness.
